Hap Lutter Memorial Appeal

The chapter is pleased to dedicate the Appeal to Hap’s memory.

The Appeal is one of the many legacies of Hap’s rich and well-lived life.

Hap Lutter

Dr. Lowell (Hap) Lutter
1939-2009

Hap Lutter was a brilliant orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle work who used his skills for the betterment of mankind. He did surgical volunteer work in Tunisia and Southeast Asia; he championed the cause of better bone health for children with dwarfism, muscular dystrophy and brittle bone disease; he was for many years the editor of the specialty medical journal Foot and Ankle International. He continued to serve as a volunteer physician after his retirement from St. Paul Foot and Ankle, a clinic he founded.

Hap was a graduate of Grinnell College and the University of Chicago Medical School. He was a dedicated partner of his wife Judy and a devoted father to his three children and a doting grandfather to four grandchildren.

“Hap was a tremendous chapter member, treasurer, friend and conservationist. He will be greatly missed.”

~ Greg Dietl, former Chapter President

Passion and Intense Effort Defined Hap

Hap brought brilliance, passion and intense effort to his many interests outside medicine – to sculpture, painting, running, bicycling, skiing and travel, for example. Fortunately for all of us, Hap loved the outdoors and the cause of environmental stewardship.

He enjoyed his life at his cabin on the Kinnickinnic River and became passionate about protecting the river and its trout fishery. Hap served the Kinnickinnic River Land Trust as a board member and served, until his untimely death, as Treasurer of the Kiap-TU-Wish Chapter of Trout Unlimited. While treasurer, Hap developed and directed the chapter’s Appeal, which has become one of the chapter’s critical fundraising tools.

Hap believed that if our members understood that only a very small amount of the money sent for the Trout Unlimited National dues comes back to the Kiap-TU-Wish Chapter, they would be willing to directly fund the important work the chapter undertakes on their behalf and on behalf of local trout streams. And he was right.
